Free Monthly Workshops For Independent Seniors

Throughout the year, SDCC is hosting a series of 12 FREE workshops and activities on topics specific to our aging population. Join us as we navigate the ins and outs of aging in place and maintaining independence! All are welcome to attend so invite your family, caregivers, neighbors, and friends.  You can sign up to receive notifications by contacting the SDCC office at 314-862-5122 or sdcc@skinker-debaliviere.com. Below is the schedule of workshops planned for 2016:

  • March 19, 10am at SDCC Office – Choosing a Home Contractor: Tips for Seniors (Guest presenter: Neighborhood contractor, Dan Hudspeth)
  • April 23, 10am at SDCC Office – Be Smart with Your Money: Financial Literacy Workshop for Seniors ( Guest Speaker: Financial Stability Coordinator, Mykel Ornbaun)
  • July 23, 1-2:30pm at Kingsbury Square Gazebo – Ice Cream Social for Seniors and their Family (Donations provided by North Star, Dierberg’s, and Fitz’s)
  • July 30, 10am at SDCC Office – Disaster Preparedness Information and the Functional Needs Registry (presentation by Sara Figueroa of the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging)
  • August 13, 10am at Four Corners/Greg Freeman Park – Morning Workout (learn and enjoy simple exercises to get your day started) Cancelled due to rain; Reschedule date TBA
  • August 27, 10am at SDCC Office – Healthy Snacks (make and enjoy healthy anytime snacks; make salsa, salad dressings, trail mix & more)
  • September 10, 10am at SDCC Office – Vertigo Explained (Is it vertigo or dizziness? Learn the symptoms and recommended treatments)
  • September 24, 10am at Four Corners/Greg Freeman Park – Low Maintenance Gardening With Trees, Shrubs & Woody Plants (Low-maintenance gardening with “woodies”. Display plants will be on-site!)
  • October 8, 10:30am meet at the Delmar MetroLink Station – Mass Transit Safety: How to Plan a Mass Transit Trip and Be Safe (destination is the National Blues Museum and Sugarfire BBQ; cost TBD)
  • October 22, 10am at SDCC Office – Banking, Power of Attorney, Wills & Estate Planning Part II (Who should inherit your estate or represent you in the event your are no longer able to represent yourself?)
  • November 5, 10am location TBA – Dancing into the Holiday Season (bring a friend and learn some of the latest dance moves or practice familiar dance steps)
  • November 19, 10am at SDCC Office – Managing Stress & Depression (learn tips to ease stress and depression that often occur during the holiday season for the elderly and those living alone)

SDCC is financed partly through a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the St. Louis Community Development Administration under the provision of Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 (Pub L, 93-383 42 USC 5301 et seq.).
