Pilot Program Details

  • This program matchs graduate students seeking off-campus housing with  homeowners who are older adults (65 years of age or older). *
  • WashU graduate students pay monthly rate to live with older adult homeowner.

* In some cases, adults “as young as 60” may be eligible to participate as well.

Applications can be emailed, mailed or hand delivered to 6008 Kingsbury Avenue.


Older Adults/ Homeowners

  • Homeowner in Skinker DeBaliviere, University City, Central West End or Clayton and live within 10-15 min driving of Washington University. Other areas may be accepted, on a case-by-case basis.
  • Earn $4,000-6,000 a year to be used for general household expenses, property taxes, home owner insurance and/or home maintenance.
    • In addition, they may gain companionship or the increased safety that comes with having a “homemate”. Homeowner can be single or a couple.
  • May exchange household chores, errand running and social interaction for lower rent payments. (Optional)

College Graduate Students

  • Graduate student at Washington University of St. Louis
  • Save 30-50% on off-campus housing costs, depending on their match agreement, by living with older homeowners.
    • In addition, they may gain companionship of an older adult or the increased support that comes with living with a St. Louis homeowner.
  • May exchange household chores, errand running and social interaction for lower rent payments. (Optional)

What This Program Is Not

  • Not a home healthcare program.
  • Not for seniors who rent their residence.
  • Not for landlords.
  • Not for groups of students who want to live together.

What We Offer

  • Suggest matches based on housing needs, budget constraints and personality
  • Verify identities and perform credit, and criminal and abuse background checks
  • Verify every home passes a housing inspection
  • Recommend a rent payment that helps homeowner and student
  • Suggest “house rules” that make homeowner and student happy
  • Check in periodically to make sure you’re having a positive experience
  • Additional support services for older adults and students

Enrollment Timeline

  • Homeowners – March/April
  • Graduate Student – February
  • Move-In – Late August or early January (Call for other arrangements)
